Members of the Lucas Fire Department continue to work toward their Advanced Firefighter Certification at the Collin County Community College's Fire Science Training facility.

This month's class covered Transportation Emergencies

Topics included:

  • Types of Transportation Emergencies
  • Small Airport Layout
  • Light Aircraft Emergencies
  • Railway Emergencies
  • Scene Safety
The Airport Layout portion of the course included discussions and films on the safe operation of ground vehicles, including emergency vehicles, in the vicinity of airport runways and taxiways.

Chief Lindsey used a four passenger helicopter to demonstrate the examples of emergency exits, fuel storage locations, power shut-off devices and potential hazards associated with a Light Aircraft emergency.

The afternoon portion of the class covered Railway Emergencies. Gary Johnson provided pictures and descriptions of the major components found on locomotives. Also covered were locomotive emergency shutdown devices and safety precautions while working in the vicinity of train derailments.

The Lucas Fire Department offers its thanks to the College for use of the facilities, to FF Gary Johnson of the Lucas FD and to Chief Kenneth Lindsey of the Allen FD for participating in our training and for providing a large 3-D training aid.
