The Lucas Fire Department held one of its twice-monthly meetings at the Collin County Community College's Fire Science Training facility.

The purpose of this meeting was "Live Fire" training using the college's automobile prop.

Objectives of the training included:

  • Approaching the Scene
  • Apparatus Placement
  • Personnel Safety
  • Rapid Deployment
  • Hazards Around the Car
  • Improved Fire Fighting Techniques
The department was divided into three- and four-member companies. A single company was "dispatched" to a reported car fire to represent a realistic inital response. Once on scene the company was responsible for assessing the scene, safe placement of the apparatus to protect the fire-fighters from traffic, proper donning of fire-fighting gear and oh yeah, putting out the fire.

Instructors and safety monitors were present and offered improved techniques and suggestions on how to become more efficient as well as ensured a safe operation.

As each crew completed the evolution, the equipment was re-stowed and the on-board water supply was replenished for the next crew.

The Lucas Fire Department definitely benefited from the experience and offers its thanks to the College for use of the facilities and to Chief Stu Grant of the Dallas FD and Capt. John Ashman of the Lewisvill FD for sharing their knowledge and experience with us.

The Lucas FD is planning "ISO live fire drills" once a quarter at the Community College Fire Science Complex Training Field". The end goal is to run live fire drills to better prepare and fight fires more safely.
